Jacob Armstead Lawrence

Born September 7, 1917 in Atlantic City, New Jersey

Spent childhood attending classes at the Harlem Community Art Center and American Artists School

Exhibited his paintings at major museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Art Institute of Chicago, and the Phillips Collection

First African American artist to have his work represented in the permanent collection at the Museum of Modern Art in New York

Received many awards including the National Medal of Arts

Died June 9, 2000
